April 2014 Update

Dear Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour,
Looking forward to spring and summer, and truly excited about summer plans!

CARAVANSTAGE, a traveling theatre company that does Cirque-de-Soleil type shows on a floating barge with the audience watching on land!
Hoping they will be performing off shore at the Woolen Mill this August 14-16. They built their barge in Kingston’s Inner Harbour 20 years ago and this is a return home! More anon.

ON THE WALL, a truly original art festival – on the retaining wall behind Rideaucrest in Doug Fluhrer Park. Artists and community members will be invited to apply to create original art works on one of the 23 panels (each 25’x8.5′). Proposed for mid to late August (Aug 18-24?) Spread the word! Hoping for submissions from local street artists as well as professionals, community groups and schools that might include painting, sculptural ideas, aboriginal works, HART Studio conceptions, environmental art, fibre art, found objects and more.
Jurors confirmed to date: Julian Brown (Kingston Portrait Prize), Primrose Craig (Kingston School of Art), Karen Peperkorn (Art Teacher, QECVI), Su Sheedy (Artist and Curator, Modern Fuel).
Burkom, Kingston, LeBlanc and Wilcox of CIBC Wood Gundy our founding sponsors, have pledged $500 but we really need your support to pay for things like park rental, publicity and to give the participating artists some small stipend to cover their costs. We have no money!!!!!

Come to the Council meeting when the motion to Council to allow us to host ON THE WALL will be put forward. We will be doing a delegation at the beginning of the meeting. An announcement concerning date and details will be sent out soon. Thanks so very much.

Other summer plans include once again, our FAMILY WEDNESDAYS IN JULY This year Burgandy Dunn has agreed to organize these events that will include the Barefoot Players as well as original crafts and games. If you are interested in helping contact bdunn@cela.ca.

Curated by Rob Mazza, this exhibit will honor the designers and builders that launched sailing’s popularity from the late 1950s through the 70s and show the transition from wood construction to fibreglass, the beginnings of mass production and affordability and increased leisure fun for the middle classes. Models and actual boats on display.

ONGOING QUICK UPDATES:

1) High Level Vision and Master Plan for Douglas R. Fluhrer Park approved by the Arts, Recreation and Community Policies Committee meeting, Thursday, March 27. To be presented to Council sometime soon. Changes to the park are not likely to happen anytime soon as the work of the City’s newly created Waterfront Working Group will have to complete their deliberations first.

2) Location of this year’s trail section still under deliberation

3) Ways being sought to raise awareness and community funding to help Kingston’s turtles.

4) Possible Inner Harbour Zimbabweyan sculpture summer camp still under consideration. Hank Doornekamp graciously offered the Woolen Mill property as a possible setting.

5) The City of Kingston’s Waterfront Working Group: Proposals from consultants being received and evaluated.

6) Inner Harbour Heritage Tour: Further discussions ongoing about new possibilities.

7) Friends of Kingston Inner Harbour Voting Members meeting, Monday, May 5 at 1 Place d’Armes, Unit 83.

8) Cycle Week (June 1 – June 8) and the Commuter Challenge. We are partnering with the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Health Unit to host a Roll-In Breakfast in Market Square on Monday, June 2. Mayor and Council are being invited to participate in a friendly competition riding into the downtown with constituents! Mayor on board! Planning in process. Should be fun. Stay tuned.

9) 9 North Street. ABNA Investments finalizing development plans with the City. In process.

10) Wellington St. Extension Outreach Group. You are cordially invited to join this new group that will be collaborating with the Ontario Public Interest Research Group in Kingston for the purpose of creating an educational presentation for community groups, organizations and schools to discuss broad concerns about revitalizing the downtown including the pros and cons of the proposed extension. 11) Kingston Streets Alive. Streets will be closed to traffic from the Memorial Centre to Lake Ontario Park (sections of Alfred, Princess and King) for a day celebrating physical activity and fun. Arts activities being planned along the way. Proposed date now changed to Sunday, Sept 21. Volunteers wanted. More anon.

12) From Fellow Community Associations:
a) The Our Neighbourhood community association is having a meeting May 7 (location TBA) to assess where to go next after their OMB hearing March 26 where they argued vigorously against the proposed development on Johnson St of a high-density 29 unit building that would replace 5 houses on Johnson St. in an area of the city zoned for one and two bedroom houses. b) Meeting of Williamsville Community Association, Monday, April 14, 7 pm St. Lukes Church. Includes presentations from KEDCO and KCAT.
c) Skeleton Park Music Festival scheduled for Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21
d) McBurney Park Neighbourhood Association in partnership with Lake Ontario Waterkeepers for the 2014 Swim, Drink Fish Challenge. Sunday, June 22. Newlands Pavilion – featuring Sheesham and Lotus Contra Dancing and the Open Voices Community Choir. More anon.

13) Thoughts afoot to consider some sort of Shoreline Improvement initiative in the fall. More anon.
